HID lights do not operate on low voltage DC current. For this reason a ballast is required to produce the electric arc within the Xenon gas bulb.
Early versions of the HID light used by many OEM equipment manufacturers require separate light & ballast assemblies. This ballast, along with an additional wiring harness, would have to be purchased separately for an extra $600 to $1000 expense. Many times retrofitting the HID lights onto older equipment is difficult with the required space needed to mount this ballast.
